Video SEO is mostly text SEO in disguise. Search engines and AI answer engines rely heavily on the text around a video — the title, the description, the transcript and the page it sits on. Some systems can now process audio and visual signals directly, but accessible text remains the most reliable route to being found, understood and quoted. A well-made video with none of that is close to invisible, and a modest video with all of it can perform well.
Why the text around a video matters more than the video
The systems deciding whether to surface your video lean heavily on text. That sounds like a limitation and is actually the practical opportunity, because the text is the part most businesses neglect.
- Transcripts. The single highest-return item. A transcript converts everything said into crawlable, quotable text. Without one, a fifteen-minute explanation of exactly the thing someone searched for is unreadable to the systems deciding what to show them.
- Titles and descriptions. On YouTube these are the primary ranking input. Write them as answers to a real question rather than as labels.
- Structured data on the hosting page. Video schema tells search engines what the video is, how long it runs and what it covers.
- The surrounding page. A video embedded on a page that explains the same subject in text has two chances to be found. A video on a bare page has one, and a weak one.
YouTube or your own site?
They serve different purposes and the answer is usually both.
| YouTube | Your own site | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Discovery — it is a search engine in its own right | Supporting a commercial page |
| Who gets the engagement | YouTube | Your domain |
| Effort to rank | Competitive but a genuine audience exists | Depends entirely on the page |
| AI answer visibility | Transcripts and descriptions are readable | Depends on the surrounding page text |
| Typical use | Top-of-funnel reach | Explaining a service to someone already considering it |
The common pattern that works: publish on YouTube for reach, embed the same video on the relevant service page, and make sure the transcript exists in both places.
How AI answers change this
When we measured our own category, keywords carrying 68% of the search volume returned an AI answer above the results. Those answers are assembled from text the engine can read — which puts an untranscribed video outside the process entirely, regardless of how good it is.
The practical implication is unglamorous. Transcribe everything. It is cheap, it takes minutes with current tooling, and it is the difference between a video being a source and a video being invisible to the systems that increasingly decide what buyers see.
What video is genuinely good for
Not everything. Video works when watching is better than reading: demonstrations, walkthroughs, anything where seeing the thing done answers the question faster than describing it.
It works poorly as a substitute for a good page. A video explaining what could have been three paragraphs asks more of the viewer and gives search engines less to work with. If the honest answer is that text would serve the reader better, write the text.
The same principle applies here as everywhere else in the durable half of SEO: the format matters less than whether the thing genuinely answers a question someone asked.
Frequently asked questions
What is video SEO?
Optimising video so it can be found — on YouTube, in Google’s results, and increasingly as a source AI answers draw on. It covers titles and descriptions, transcripts, structured data on the hosting page, and whether the video genuinely answers a question people ask.
Does adding video to a page improve its SEO?
Only if the video is relevant and the page is set up properly. An embedded video that keeps readers on the page longer helps indirectly. An unrelated video that slows the page down does the opposite.
Should I host video on YouTube or my own site?
YouTube for reach, since it is a search engine in its own right. Your own site when the video supports a commercial page and you want the engagement credited there. Many businesses do both, with YouTube for discovery and an embed on the page that converts.
Do transcripts matter for video SEO?
Considerably. A transcript turns spoken content into text that can be crawled, indexed and quoted. Without one, everything said in the video is invisible to search engines and to AI answer engines.
Can video content be cited in AI answers?
Indirectly, and mostly through its text. Answer engines quote what they can read, which means transcripts, descriptions and the surrounding page. A video with no text around it is very hard for them to use.
